FARMING AT THE ASYLUM

The following articles were transcribed by Arline Laferry, docent, Nevada Historical Society:

REG 1882 Oct 16 page 3
Superintendent Dawson of the asylum is clearing up the land and preparing it for seed in the spring.  He will make the State's farm a very valuable piece of property in a few momths.
 
WNSJ 1884 June 7 page 3
Dr. Bishop expects to cut 150 tons of hay from the Asylum farm this season.
 
WNSJ  1887 Sept 17
The are now cutting second crop of hay at the Asylum farm.  The building over the water wheel at the Asylum is now about completed.
 
REG 1893 Sept 22 p 3  The Fair.  The Insane Asylum farm display is interesting.  The patients are a success at raising vegetables.
 
WNSJ 1898 Sept 21.  The Asylum farm will show its splendid products, this being the first Fair at which the Asylum folks have ever made a display.
 
DNSJ 1897 November 3
There is a sample of tobacco in the Reno Drug Company's window wich was raised on the Asylum farm and properly cured and twisted.  One of the inmates of the institution has put up quite a quantity of it, and judges of the weed say it is excellent.
 
WG  1894 August 2.  The Asylum Farm.  A comfortable home for Nevada's unfortunates.
Gov Colcord, Statecontroller R.L. Horton and State Treasurer George Richers, comprising the board for the Care of the Insane, visited the farm yesterday.

Tells about the farm.  748 dozens of eggs last year, 11, 784 gallons of milk.  just part of the article.
 
REG  1901 April 29 page 2
The Board completed the purchase of the Sullivan-Kelly ditch in accordance with an act of the last legislature and paid the money, $9,050.  The purchase gave the asylum farm an abudance of water.
 
NSJ 1917 Dec 9 page 9  Potatoes substituted.
The substitution of potatoes furthered by the large crop of potatoes raised on the asylum farm is the reason for this conservation.  No complaint has been made by the patients who do not seem to miss the white bread when served with potatoes and gravy.
 
NSJ 1945 August 4 page 12.
100 tons of newly harvested hay list in specacular blaze at Asylum Farm.   Goes on to tell of the fire.
